Moving Minutes – Saving Private Ryan – “Earn This”
By
Captain John H. Miller, tasked with taking seven men into a combat zone to save one soldier, finally finds Private James Ryan. But Private Ryan refuses his ticket home—granted by General Eisenhower after Ryan’s three brothers die in combat—so that he can help Captain Miller defend a critical bridge in Normandy. “Earn This” is a sobering reminder of the true cost of liberty, and a moving testament to the fact that freedom must be cherished and defended.

@broadcastbeefy That is the same German soldier who kills Irwin Wade (doctor) on the hills, and is blindfolded and relased by Upham. Probably, the German tells him that He hasn’t the courage to shoot him and Upham is forced to do so…

Cried sooo hard at this scene. Just so memorable and makes you really think about how valuable life really is.

What i find is the saddest part of this clip is not when the Captain says “earn it” but when steamboat Willie looks at Upham all happy to see him as if he was a friend of his but fuckin Upham shoots the poor fellow AND he was unarmed WAR CRIME!!! Very sad when that German fellow dies.

Where exactly is Miller shot and by whom?

@hifatpeople You see John Miller and nearly his whole squad died just to keep him alive. So it be pointless if Ryan just when back home and become a criminal, hobo or some asshole..
So Tom Hank wants him to spend his living life into doing something useful.. contribute to society..

It’s amazing how two words can blow up so much emotion.
The way he says “Earn this.” Is, well.. amazing.

I am ambivalent about the portrayal of Capt Miller’s final words to Private Ryan. The motto of the 75th Ranger Regiment was “Sua sponte,” which can be translated from the Latin to mean “I chose this.” Indeed, liberty is to be cherished and defended. It stems from a decision to act on a choice, with all of its consequences. In this way, in life or death, in a state of bondage or freedom, liberty is experienced. “Sua sponte” would have been powerfully profound. I still love the movie though!

What does he tell him to earn ( I know it’s the paper but what’s on it)

@amar7368 The freedom to love, to live, and prosper without tyranny, to have children and grandchildren who can know such peace…that is the reason Miller and his men were fighting in the first place. Ryan has lived a life that so many were denied, a good life – a life worthy of all of them.

@amar7368 Girls don’t understand it? Rubbish. I think you’ll find it is you who doesn’t understand it. Yes, at the heart of the sadness is that Ryan doesn’t think he earned it – that his life wasn’t worthy of such sacrifice – but he is wrong. Sure he has no monument in his name or done anything of great significance, but in all other aspects he has lived a life that earned it.

I can’t hold it back when tom says earn this. It kills me. Same thing happens to me with donnie darko when he talks about being at peace before he laughs and rolls over in his bed to die. Bravery in the face of death is awesome.

Truley a very touching movie. I find girls don’t understand what makes it so sad, and its the fact that ryan doesn’t think he earned his life. (and he didn’t)

Tom Hanks is amazing actor. I remember seeing this in the flicks, being absolutely blown away by it, my mate came out in floods of tears – I did well to hold it back, sad film, but so good!
